The Prison of Azkaban on top of blue, wrinkled material

Number three in the world's most famous book series follows Harry, Ron and Hermione as they investigate and try to find the escaped prisoner, Sirius Black. Black has escaped from Azkaban prison for wizards and is believed to be out to kill Harry.

As the new school year begins, Hogwarts is patrolled by Azkaban's prison guards, known as Dementors. The presence of the Dementors affects Harry greatly, and he enlists the help of Professor Lupin to learn how to fight them off. Using a secret map given to him by Ron's brothers Fred and George Weasley, Harry manages to sneak into Hogsmeade, where he overhears a conversation and learns that Black is in fact his godfather. Black and Harry's father, James, were best friends during their time at Hogswarts, along with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. Black is accused of killing Pettigrew and betraying James to Voldemort.

Harry, Ron and Hermione visit Hagrid just before his beloved hippogriff is to be executed and are surprised to find Ron's missing pet rat hiding in Hagrid's hut. As the three return to Hogwarts, taking Ron's rat with them, Ron is attacked by a vicious dog, dragged into a secret tunnel and disappears. Hermione and Harry go through the tunnel after Ron and are followed by Lupin, who has been able to track them using Harry's secret map. The vicious dog turns out to be Black in his Animagus form, and Harry is about to kill him when Lupin arrives and disarms him.

Black and Lupin explain to the three children that Pettigrew is also an Animagus and is Ron's rat. They also explain that it was Pettigrew, not Black, who betrayed Harry's parents and worked with Voldemort, leading to their eventual murder. Lupin and Black escort the children back to school, but on the way the moon suddenly appears and Lupin turns into a werewolf. Black, Harry and Hermione are attacked by the Dementors and Pettigrew escapes.

Harry, Hermione and Ron wake up in the school hospital and are visited by Dumbledore, who confirms that Black is innocent of the crimes he has been accused of. He instructs Harry and Hermione to go back in time and free him before he is handed over to the Dementors and sent back to Askaban. Using their Time-Turner, Hermione and Harry travel back three hours, rescue Hagrid's hippogriff and use it to help Black escape.

This is my favourite film and, so far, my favourite book in the series. It's just too exciting!
