According to recent data, the number of active armed conflicts around the world is worryingly high. At approximately 56, it can feel hard to keep up with them all without going insane. Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Gaza, US-Iran are the top three, but the conflicts in Sudan, DRC, Myanmar, Somalia, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso all deserve mentions too. They've all been going on for so long, that they've kind of become permanent features of life now. But this blog post isn't going to be about those conflicts being fought with weapons and bombs and rape. This is a post about the war the right have started with the left. This is about the war on woke.

Now, some of you lefty-liberal, Guardian-reading types may shudder at that word. But, woke just means (in my opinion and that of British National Treasure, Kathy Burke) that you just support Universal Human Rights. Not selective human rights. No. Universal ones. Here's an easy-to-follow motto if you're trying to work out how to be woke: "Don't be a cunt". What this means is that all people, no matter where they come from, no matter which god they worship, no matter which gender or non-gender they are, no matter who they choose to sleep with, are all entitled to be treated with dignity and have the right to live in safety. Put like that, it seems like a relatively easy concept to grasp, right? No. Wrong.

The next words I'm about to write might sound like a wild conspiracy theory, but sadly, they are not. There is an actual, global network of actual far-right extremists that is backing a global plot to push the "war on woke". Former British Prime Minister, Lettuce Truss, recently hosted the British edition of the US's ultra conservative CPAC - Conservative Political Action Conference. Now it wasn't as flashy as its American counterpart, in fact, there was an embarrassingly low turnout, but just the fact that it happened at all is the worrying part.

There is now a job that exists called "Hard-Right Social Media Influencer". As if normal influencers sitting in Dubai while bombs dropped around them weren't bad enough. These young, ultra-conservative youth ambassadors, (as CPAC affectionately calls them), were sent out on missions, tasked with reaching out to university students at prestigious universities like Oxford and Cambridge. The goal being to convince these students that the (ultra)-right way is the only right way.

These people call for things like an ethnically homogenous Christian Britain. Something that has like, literally, NEVER existed. Singing their anthem, The Only Way Is Fascism, to the tune of Yazz's 1980 hit song, The Only Way Is Up, these young, rich and highly connected individuals promote Christian principles, which have nothing  to do with Christianity and everything to do with forcing through a racist, misogynistic, money making Evangelical worldview that essentially wants to destroy democracy and the planet.

Sound crazy? Well it is crazy, but it is really happening. In the US, there's a Catholic broadcaster called EWTN which has its headquarters in Alabama. Thanks to a handy tax loophole, this broadcaster for God, can use "donor-advised funds" so that the ultra, mega, super rich, can donate massively obscene amounts of money, all tax-deductible obviously, while remaining anonymous. Some of these donations come from individuals that back anti-LGBTQI+, anti-immigration causes and of course, Trump's famous Project 2025. With these donations, donors can propose ways to change US politics, for example, by expanding presidential powers or stripping away environmental protections.

These are the people who helped overturn Roe v. Wade. These are the people who don't believe women should have any rights over their own bodies. These are the people who think trans women just want access to women's bathrooms so that they can rape them. These are people who believe in the great replacement theory. These are the people who have removed vaccine mandates and now kids are dying of measles again. These are the people who got the Brexit vote through. These are the people who covered up the Epstein files.

Joseph Robertson, the organiser of CPAC GB and Director of the ultra-conservative thinktank, Touchpoint Strategy, said:

But the reality is, without Christian values, there's no human rights.

He claims that the right defends human rights more than the left, because the right wants to dismantle them and return to the times when fundamental human rights were god given as opposed to man made. So basically, back to the time of the Bible when men could just stone a woman if she were unfaithful? Sounds so great! It just sounds more like this return to religious traditionalism is just giving young men a free pass to be misogynistic, homophobic, racist  and Islamophobic. Which is weird because it's sounds to me like the Taliban is the perfect role model for them.

This network of democracy destroying men is funded by an even bigger, darker network with proven links to the Kremlin (surprise, surprise!) and other far-right organisations in Europe and the US.

But it's not just the far-right that hate woke people and anyone who doesn't follow the bible literally. The centre right has also adopted the rhetoric. In the UK, the Tory leader, Kemi Badenoch has stated how much she can't wait to pull the UK out of the European Convention on Human Right (ECHR) and that ditching net zero policies is just the thing to do on a planet about to go up in flames with everyone being cooked like a sausage on a barbeque. Badenoch believes, like Merz in Germany, that by repeating the same lies as the far-right, they'll directly benefit from an upsurge in new voters. News alert - they won't and they historically haven't. One of the core reasons the right is thriving right now and the left appears to be drowning, is money. The right has the investment. The millionaires, billionaires and potential trillionaires are (in general) funding the right. They own the media, the thinktanks, and have all the connections, while the left is arguing about whether a person who eats meat should be allowed to be a member of the Green Party.

I'm one of those annoying left people who truly believes in Universal Human Rights. I don't care if you eat 6 cows a day, you can still join the Green Party. I would just ask you to make sure that the cows have been grass fed and well treated! Would I describe myself as a Marxist? Possibly, if I had to pick a word. I actually prefer Engels because I think he was more pragmatic. I would even go one further and call myself and Orwellianist (it's a new word I've just invented!) because I think George Orwell was even more correct in his prophecies than Marx. Probably because, with the power of hindsight, he got to see what some megalomaniacs actually did with Marx's ideas.

As Marx himself actually said:

If anything is certain, it is that

I myself am not a Marxist.

In a recent speech, the White House deputy chief of staff and proud white supremacist, Steven Miller, called "leftwing political terrorism" a "fatal cancer of civilization". He said that Antifa demonstrators are "all deformed in some way, in their appearance, in their dress, in their mannerism". He asked why "there is not one normal-looking person among them". He recommended that governments be "completely unflinching in the pursuit of justice against these enemies of civilization". I mean, call me mean, but have you SEEN Steven Miller? He's calling the members of Antifa deformed? Look in the mirror, mate. 

Also, Antifa is a very decentralised movement. It's made up of a myriad of different groups. Their one joint belief is that they are anti-fascist. But, I mean, who isn't anti-fascist? Just Fascists. So unless you're an adherent of fascist ideology, you're basically an anti-fascist. Now, I myself, as a self-described left-wing wokey, also have my issues with some parts and members of the Antifa scene. I'm suspicious of a group that has its roots in Stalinist ideology, because, I'm not a fan of any extremes. And I'm really not a fan of Stalin, despite his youthful handsomeness. But I am anti-fascist. Because I'm normal and, I know I keep going on about all that woke stuff, but I really do believe in Universal Human Rights. For EVERYONE! It's 81 years since the German Nazi party was defeated in WW2, but the fight against Fascism didn't end there. Mainly because the current winners of the FIFA World Cup carried on being Fascist right up until 1975. Sadly, the fight against Fascism never ends. 

Today's new breed of Fascists aren't patrolling the streets with a uniform raising their arms. They're the Government, the Police, the Armed Forces, running the media platforms. It's harder to escape them because they've become truly global. They're organised and well funded. The left is neither organised nor well funded and this will be our downfall. Stop looking for perfection in allies. We're fighting Fascists, and it shouldn't matter whether you're a vegan or a carnivore, whether you drive a car or ride a bike. If we don't unite against this evil, then we may as well hand them the keys to our Parliaments  and our futures now.

They call us woke, so let's really actually wake the fuck up, because the time to work together was yesterday. Every day we spend infighting is another day they grow stronger, inching closer to power and seizing our rights. As Orwell warned in the most famous and prescient example of dystopian fiction, 1984:

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot

stamping on a human face - for ever.

We can't let the boot stamp on our faces. Like Orwell also wrote in Homage to Catalonia:

There are occasions when it pays better to fight

and be beaten than not to fight at all.

This is one of those occasions.
